End of Year Book Survey 2021

Slightly belated as per usual with me, but here's my reading wrap up for 2021! The End of Year Book Survey is hosted by Jamie @PerpetualPageTurner, and is a great way to reflect on the past year of reading.

Number Of Books You Read: 40

Number of Re-Reads: 1 (The Hating Game, again!)

Genre You Read The Most From: Historical Fiction, although it was actually a pretty close call with contemporary fiction this year!

Best Book You Read In 2021? Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. I knew the moment I finished this that it would be my favourite book of the year, and that was back in May! It's such a beautiful read, unlike anything else I've ever read, and it's a story that will stay with me forever.

Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t? The Duke & I by Julia Quinn. I was obsessed with the Bridgerton TV adaptation so was really excited to read the books. They're alright, but I've read better regency romances to be honest. Sorry!

Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read? Dances & Dreams on Diamond Street by Craig Revel Horwood. Don't let the twee title and cover (designed surely to appeal to Craig's Strictly Come Dancing fanbase) put you off. This is a really fun slice of 90s London nostalgia. Hazarding a guess at it being semi-autobiographical too!

Best Sequel of 2021? A Three Dog Problem by S.J. Bennett. The second installment in the Her Majesty The Queen investigates series. Yes you read that right, The Queen solves crimes! This is a really fun series with great characterisation.

Favorite new author you discovered in 2021? Taylor Jenkins Reid. Very late to this party I know.

Book You Read In 2021 That You Would Be MOST Likely To Re-Read Next Year? The Hating Game. I re-read it every year and every year I love it more.

Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone? The Maidens. Dark Academia murder mystery. It was the Oxford setting that sold me on this one and it didn't disappoint.

Most unputdownable book of the year? The Idea of You by Robinne Lee. Emotional boyband/rockstar romance that will make your heart hurt. Crazy addictive too!

Favorite cover of a book you read in 2021? The Metal Heart by Caroline Lea. And the story is just as stunning as the cover!

Most memorable character of 2021? Kya in Where the Crawdads Sing.

Most beautifully written book read in 2021? Where the Crawdads Sing

Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year? Where the Crawdads Sing. Can you tell I really, really loved this book!?

Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2021 to finally read? Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I gave in to the hype and now I'm obsessed.

Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2021?
The Magician by Colm Toibin /The Boy, The Mole, The Fox & The Horse by Charlie Mackesy

Best Book You Read In 2021 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure/Bookstagram, Etc. Beach Read. This wouldn't have been on my radar at all if it wasn't for Bookstagram. Pleased to say that it lived up to the hype too!

Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2021? Cesare, The Metal Heart. What a beautiful, gentle soul.

Favourite book read in 2021 from an Author You've Read Previously Conversations with Friends. Dare I say I enjoyed it more than Normal People?

Best 2021 debut you read? The Paper Palace. Whilst I did have issues with the plot of this book there's no denying that the writing is stunning and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

Hidden Gem Of The Year? Dances & Dreams on Diamond Street

Most Unique Book You Read In 2021? Daisy Jones. The interview format took some getting used to, but worked so well and made it all the more realistic.

So there you have it, my 2021 in reading! Please leave me links to yours, or give me book recommendations that you've loved this year.

And, if it's not too late to say it, Happy New Year!
