Review: The Princess Problem by Diane Darcy

Alicia Dayne is delighted to be hired to make an advert for Highborn Mattresses, based on her Princess and the Pea idea. But taking the lucrative job means being set up with the head of the company - by his mother! Picturing a dateless sad-sack, Alicia is taken aback when she meets Jonas Highborn, drop dead gorgeous with a very bad attitude. Opposed to her romantic idealism in favour of a more straight talking advert, the pair of them just can't seem to get along. Or does their mutual hatred mask more affectionate feelings? With Jonas' mother Willa out to play matchmaker it seems that not matter how hard they try to fight it, love really is on the cards if only they have the courage to take a chance.

I loved this story and read it in one sitting. A modern spin on the fairytale genre, with a dash of the old 'hatred turning into love' cliché, and you have the makings of a great read. I liked the idea of the Alicia and Jonas first meeting in the dark, even though it was obvious where the story was going from the moment they met. The only thing that I found a little unbelievable was how quickly their feeling toward each other changed. Willa was a brilliant character and I'm glad that she got a happy ending too!

4/5 stars: The Princess Problem is an adorable short story, one that sets out to demonstrate how fairy tales can happen in real life- even to the most cynical of romantics.
