Blog Tour - About that Night by Elaine Bedell

Today I'm exited to be part of the blog tour for About That Night by Elaine Bedell! Thanks to Joe Thomas at HQ Stories for the review copy!

Elizabeth Place might have been jilted on her wedding day one year ago, but at least she’s still got her brilliant job producing one of the biggest shows on TV!

But when larger-than-life TV host, Ricky Clough, dies live on air, her life is sent spinning out of control. And with foul play suspected, the spotlight is turned firmly on his colleagues – especially Hutch, the man desperate for Ricky’s job and whom Elizabeth is secretly dating.

As her world comes crashing down around her, Elizabeth realises that perhaps the only person she can really trust, is herself…

What really makes this book stand out is its fascinating insight into the fast-paced backstage world of television. Elaine has previously worked for both BBC and ITV, and her inside knowledge shines through. You can feel the excitement of the gallery as the show is about to go live, the panic when things don't go to plan and the unpredictable host deviates from the script. There's so much that goes on behind the scenes that we as viewers never think about. There's still the glitz and glamour and the showbiz parties, but with an undercurrent of the darker side of fame.

The plot is essentially a whodunit, but from an unusual perspective. Rather than following the detectives, we see events entirely through the eyes of Elizabeth Place, Ricky's producer, who witnesses his death first hand. We know Elizabeth is innocent (at least, we think we do), so we try to piece together what happened with her, but like her we don't even get close to figuring out what really happened that night. A lot of the story is told through flashback, to significant events in the weeks before Ricky's death, but also to moments that have shaped Elizabeth's life. She's had a hard time, and has thrown herself into her work as a result, leaving little to no time for a personal life. She has her flaws, but as a reader you find yourself rooting for her because you know she deserves better.

About that Night is a clever, compelling page turner. I'm looking forward to reading more from Elaine Bedell!
