End of Year Book Survey

It's that time of year again! Every year Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner hosts The End of Year Book Survey. I love doing this as it makes me reflect on my year of reading. However it also reminds me how much I've failed at blogging this year! New Year's Resolutions anyone!?

True to form, my standout books this year are ones that I discovered completely by accident, whilst most of the hyped novels fell a bit flat for me.

Number Of Books You Read: 44
Number of Re-Reads: 0
Genre You Read The Most From: Historical Fiction. No surprise there!

Best Book You Read In 2018?
I've done a full top ten rundown here.

Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?
Rebecca. I'd heard so much hype I was ready to be blown away. And I wasn't? I LOVE Daphne Du Maurier's writing style but the story just didn't grab me like I'd expected it to.

Most beautifully written book read in 2018?
Rebecca

Beatrice and Benedick. I was SO excited to read it when it first arrived, then it sat on my shelf for four years...

Best Book You Read In 2018 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else: I Let You Go/I See You by Clare Mackintosh. Both lent to me by a work colleague. They're books I would never have chosen for myself, but I was hooked on them!

Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?
I See You by Claire Mackintosh

Best 2017 debut you read?

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. I've never read anything like it.

Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?
My Lady's Choosing. This is a really fun choose your own adventure novel. Every classic romance cliche is in there, and if you're lucky you can bag yourself a Mr Darcy or Jamie Fraser!

Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2018?
Journey's End by R.C. Sherriff. I first read this at school, and with the First World War Centenary in December I thought it was time to revisit it. It's no less poignant second time around.

Journey's End. I knew what was going to happen but that only makes it more painful if anything!

Shortest / Longest Book You Read In 2018?
Journey's End / Darling Blue by Tracy Rees

Hidden Gem Of The Year?
Fools and Mortals by Bernard Cornwell. This was my first of his novels and I really loved it! It follows Shakespeare and his brother around the writing and first performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream. If you liked Shakespeare in Love you'll like this.

Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year
Fools and Mortals - the banter and camaraderie between the band of players was so much fun to read!

The Stranger by Kate Riordan
